Spanish oboist José Luis García Vegara is Principal Oboe of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and is recognised for the elegance, clarity and expressive intensity of his playing.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied with Tess Miller and Celia Nicklin, he received First Class Honours and was awarded the Principal’s Prize. He subsequently joined the Karajan Akademie of the Berlin Philharmonic, studying with Jonathan Kelly and performing regularly with the orchestra.
As a guest principal, José Luis García Vegara has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. He has collaborated with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Paavo Järvi, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding, Daniele Gatti and Christian Thielemann.
His performances have taken him to major concert halls across Europe, Asia and the Americas, including Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Philharmonie Berlin, Teatro San Carlo, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Royal Albert Hall. He has recorded for labels including Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Pentatone and RCA.
Alongside his orchestral career, José Luis García Vegara is dedicated to teaching and mentoring young musicians. He has taught at the Mahler Academy in Bolzano and has given masterclasses in Japan, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom and Argentina. He is also professor at the Barenboim–Said Foundation in Seville.
He regularly performs with the Estonian Festival Orchestra and, since 2020, has appeared as a regular guest with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra.
